2016-08-01 | Prince's Family Announce Date for Official Tribute Concert |
Prince's family says an official tribute concert honoring the late icon will take place in October in the singer's hometown of Minneapolis.
In a statement to The Associated Press on Thursday, Prince's family said the concert will be held on Oct. 13 at the U.S. Bank Stadium. Performers will soon be announced on a rolling basis. Tickets will go on sale next month.
Prince died April 21 of a drug overdose. The Purple One's brothers and sisters said in a joint statement that they "have been moved by the tremendous love and support of Prince's friends and fans around the world."
"We are excited for the opportunity to bring everyone together for the official family celebration of Prince's life, music and legacy, and there is no better place to do it than his hometown of Minneapolis," the statement read. "We are honored by the artists who will pay tribute and grateful to those that have worked so hard to make this celebration possible."
Since Prince's death, countless performers have paid tribute to the entertainer. Beyonce and the Dixie Chicks have covered his songs during their live shows, and Madonna sang "Nothing Compares 2 U" and "Purple Rain" — with the help of Stevie Wonder — at the Billboard Music Awards in May.
BET dedicated much of its awards show last month to Prince with performances from Sheila E., The Roots, Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae, Maxwell, Bilal, Tori Kelly, Wonder and Prince's ex-wife, Mayte Garcia. Source: BillBoard |
2013-05-24 | Billboard Awards: Miguel Kicks Fans With Leap |
American pop artist Miguel accidentally kicked two women in the head when he tried to jump over a "catwalk" at the Billboard Awards.
He was singing his hit "Adorn" when he attempted to leap over the audience to another part of the stage.
But he misjudged the jump and landed short on top of two fans watching his act at the show at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Both women appeared to be dazed by the mishap and held their heads as they walked away.
Referring to the accident on Twitter, Miguel later posted a message saying he got "caught up in the moment".
The women were reported to be OK and one was later spotted backstage with Miguel, holding an ice pack.
Justin Bieber, who performed twice and won three awards, including top male artist and social artist, was booed when he collected the fan-voted milestone award.
But he hit back, saying: "I'm 19 years old. I think I'm doing a pretty good job.
"And basically from my heart I really just want to say it should really be about the music, it should be about the craft that I'm making.
"This is not a gimmick. I'm an artist and I should be taken seriously and all this other b******* should not be spoken."
But the evening belonged to singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, who won eight awards, including top artist and top Billboard 200 album for Red.
She told the crowd: "You are the longest and best relationship I ever had."
The singer delighted the audience with a performance of her hit 22, which she started backstage before working her way to the main stage on the back of a bike accompanied by background dancers and a flurry of red balloons.
Honours also went to lass=vlin href=/vcat.phtml?action=va&singer=79>Madonna, who took three awards, including top touring artist for her MDNA tour, and Prince, who closed the show after taking the icon award in recognition of his career. Source: Ananova |
2010-07-12 | Fans cash in on free Prince album |
Prince may regret his decision to give away his new album for free with two newspapers - entrepreneurial readers are selling copies online for more than £15.
"The Purple Rain" hitmaker struck a deal with the Daily Mirror and Daily Record to hand out his new disc 20TEN with copies of the newspapers on Saturday.
He insisted it was the right move as it would circumvent internet piracy and would cause him "no stress".
But the singer might already be ruing his decision - hundreds of copies of the CD have gone onsale on various websites, attracting bids of more than £15.
One star who won't be bidding on the record is Sir Elton John - the Daily Mirror reports he ordered five copies of the paper to be sent to his home by courier on Saturday to ensure he got hold of the album. Source: Ananova |
2010-07-05 | Prince: "The internet isn't hip" |
Pop superstar Prince is adamant he will never sell his songs on the internet, insisting web-based outlets will soon disappear because they are no longer "hip".
"The Purple Rain" hitmaker has long battled to keep his music offline - in 2007 he sued video sharing website YouTube.com as well as eBay.com claiming they "are clearly able (to) filter porn and paedophile material but appear to choose not to filter out the unauthorised music and film content which is core to their business success."
Prince has also moved to ban fansites using images and anything linked to his likeness, while a home video of a child dancing to one of his songs on YouTube was pulled down in 2007 after the star's Universal Music Publishing claimed the recording infringed copyright.
The artist is still refusing to allow websites to sell his music and he's adamant fans will soon move on from the internet.
He says, "The internet's completely over. I don't see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won't pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can't get it.
"The internet's like MTV. At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good. They just fill your head with numbers and that can't be good for you." Source: Ananova |
2008-10-24 | Beyonce unveils her stage alias |
Beyonce has rechristened herself Sasha Fierce.
In a move reminiscent of Prince’s decision to rename himself as an unpronounceable symbol in 1993, Beyoncé has altered her moniker for forthcoming album I Am…Sasha Fierce.
An official statement reads: “I have someone else that takes over when it's time for me to work and when I'm on stage. An alter-ego I've created that kind of protects me and who I really am.
"Sasha Fierce is the fun, more sensual, more aggressive, more outspoken and more glamorous side that comes out when I'm working and when I'm on the stage."
I Am...Sasha Fierce, which is yet to be given a release date, will feature Beyoncé's... sorry, Sasha's hotly-anticipated collaboration with Justin Timberlake. Source: Ananova |
2007-11-07 | Prince attacks fan sites |
Prince's lawyers have ordered Prince fan sites to remove any image bearing his likeness.
Owners of the fan sites aren't happy with the idea deciding to form a new site called princefansunited.com.
In a statement on the site they write: "It is our opinion that these threats are not made in an attempt to enforce valid copyright as Prince alleges in his threats, rather we believe they are attempts to stifle all critical commentary about Prince.
"We strongly believe that such actions are in violation of the freedom of speech and should not be allowed."

The purple one was watching Matthew Williamson's collection Saunter Past when he suddenly jumped onto the catwalk to strut his stuff.
After cavorting with a pair of identical twin models, Prince's band then emerged to support the megastar as he burst into song, before the show ended to the tune of his hit Kiss.

Prince has made a series of bizarre demands on the Dorchester Hotel as he moves in to begin his 21-date residency at London's O2 Arena.
A source told the Daily Star: "He wants everything to be black from the curtains and carpets to all the furniture.
"There has even been a request for black candles so the place is very calm - but obviously very very dark."
The Purple Rain singer's entourage are also making many extravagant requests including "an Oxygen bar which will be manned by a team of foxy women."
Despite their bizarre nature, it doesn't look like staff at the Dorchester will be declining the musical magician... out of fear.
"One thing is for sure, you don't mess with the little man. He may be small but he has power", the source added. Source: Ananova |
