Paula Abdul has publicly announced via Twitter she is leaving American Idol, the show she claims became an "international phenomenon" with her help.
Writing on her page of the social networking site, the singer tweeted: "With sadness in my heart, I've decided not to return to Idol."
There has been speculation over her position as one quarter of the judging panel, which includes Simon Cowell, for weeks.
Abdul had been trying to negotiate a new contract with the hit US show but said in in July she was optimistc she would reach an agreement.
It is reported she wanted a substantial pay rise from the estimated $2m she earned last year.
Abdul tweeted: "I'll miss nuturing all the new talent, but most of all being part of a show that I helped from day one become an international phenomenon."
"What I want to say most, is how much I appreciate the undying support and enormous love that you have showered upon me. It truly has been breathtaking."
In a statement, Fox and the show's producers said Abdul had been "an important part of the American Idol family over the last eight seasons, and we are saddened that she has decided not to return to the show."
They said she was a "tremendous talent" and wished her the best.
Her decision to quit comes a day after Fox announced Kara DioGuardi would remain on the judging panel for a second season along with Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson.
American Idol host Ryan Seacrest tweeted he was "shocked and saddened about Paula.
"Idol and the cast have grown with each other over the last 8 seasons. I can't imagine the panel without Paula. She's a star @ a great friend."
Reaction amongst other Fox colleagues has been one of disbelief.
So You Think You Can Dance judge, Mary Murphy, said: "I'm really saddened by the fact that Paula Abdul is leaving.
"I hope something's going to happen and they renegotiate and, and somehow they save the day. I really do because I think it, she's going to be greatly missed on that show." Source: Ananova
